A beginner's guide to the Vendee  04/02/2014

If you're planning your next holiday to France and aren't sure where to go, make sure the gorgeous Vendee region is on your shortlist. And if you've never been here before, you can find out the basics with our quick guide.

Where is it?

The Vendee is an area in west-central France, and it's named after the river that runs through it. Getting here is simple, with the Vendee just a few hours' drive from ferry ports like Calais and Cherbourg.

What kind of holiday can I have there?

Known for its beautiful beaches, fun and interesting museums, great food, and historical attractions, the Vendee has something to offer almost every kind of traveller. It's a particularly good destination for families, though.

For instance, many of its beaches boast Blue Flag status - something that means they're clean and safe, and so ideal for families. Plus, there is a host of family-friendly museums and activity centres, not to mention some great campsites and caravan parks for the perfect family adventure.

Indeed, in terms of accommodation, there are some excellent luxury campsites and caravan parks that offer a wide range of children's facilities - including kids' clubs - and direct access to beautiful beaches.

What can I do?

Of course, hitting the beach is a must, and there is a wide selection of great options to choose from. Among the best is Plage du Veillon, which is brilliant for families and walkers alike. Come here and you can not only expect fantastic views, but a great selection of things to do as well.

If you like the sound of an educational day out with the kids, meanwhile, you can visit the Ecomusee du Marais Vendee. This open-air museum will introduce you to the history of the Vendee's famous marshes and, since children will have the chance to look inside some traditional houses and meet some exciting animals, they're bound to have loads of fun while they're learning.

Other great things to do in the Vendee include exploring its mills, going cycling and visiting its abbeys, so there's plenty of scope for creating a varied, exciting itinerary.
