The sea has had a strong influence on the lives and livelihoods of the communities that are based along the West Coast of France. The Atlantic waves have attracted water sport enthusiasts for decades and many of the coastal towns have been built up around harbours built to support the fishing trade.
With 1,700 miles of rugged coastline, Brittany is a great place to head if you love the sea. In Brittany you are never far from sandy beaches, a taste freshly caught fish and the chance to explore hidden coves or rock pools.
To appreciate the wonder of the seas, you may want to head to Brest. Brest is formed around a large natural harbour, where you can still admire fishing vessels alongside luxury yachts. The Pont de l’Iroise Bridge is an impressive structure in its own right, but also offers great views of the harbour and the River Elorn. Brest also has a commercial quayside where you can see boat building in action at the traditional shipyards and visit the Finistere’s Lighthouses.
When on holiday in Brittany a great family day out can be enjoyed at Oceanopolis in Brest. This impressive aquarium offers a view into the temperate Atlantic waters, with fish that are common in the sea around Brittany. From the ocean floor, up to the shallow coastal waters, the Temperate Pavilion allows you to see the diversity of species around Brittany and learn more about the tides, currents and waves.
In addition to local sealife, there is a Tropical Pavilion where you can get a glimpse of coral reefs, tropical rainforests, mangrove swamps, turtles and sharks. At the other end of the spectrum the Polar Pavilion includes penguins, seals and other species that survive in the frozen seas of the Artic and Antarctic.
Having driven to France, you may wish to ditch the car for the duration of your camping holiday, but this doesn’t mean you have to miss out. From La Foret, our authentic campsite in Brittany, free transportation is offered through the summer to Oceanopolis. You can sit back and let the driver negotiate the roads, dropping you outside the entrance to the attraction. After your visit to the aquarium, you will be safely returned to the campsite.
From splashing in the surf or surfing on the waves, to seeing the hundreds of underwater species at Oceanopolis, a holiday at La Foret campsite offers many ways to appreciate the sea.
