From fairytale castles to imposing fortresses, the Vendee is home to some truly spectacular chateaux. Visiting one or two of these makes for the perfect family day out during your holiday in the Vendee - and you'll find there are plenty of options to choose from.

Le Chateau de Gilles de Rais
Located on a rocky crag in Tiffauges, le Chateau de Gilles de Rais is certainly impressive to look at. What really makes this castle stand out, though, is what's inside.
You see, this is where you can learn all about warfare in the Middle Ages, with the chateau housing an important collection of medieval war machines. Plus, it brings them to life with a 3D film - something that will help little ones and adults alike get a picture of what life was like back then.
It's also worth bearing in mind that, at certain times of the year, the castle stages events. In July and August, for instance, is a daily music and theatre show, while in December there's an atmospheric Christmas market.
Chateau de Saint Mesmin
Le Chateau de Saint Mesmin, meanwhile, can be found at Saint Andre sur Sevre. Dating back to the 14th century, it is known for is 28 m high keep, as well as its fun-filled medieval festival in July and August, which is a particular highlight for families.
Visit here during these months and you can look forward to things like medieval banquets, special entertainment for children and learning all about how the castle worked in its heyday.
Chateau de Talmont
Dating back to the 11th century, Chateau de Talmont is a listed medieval fortress in Talmont Saint Hilaire. A great place for kids and adults alike to take a step back into the Middle Ages, this chateau puts on a host of activities, shows and workshops in July and August, as well as informative guided tours.
Check the attraction's events calendar to find out what exactly will be on during your trip, but previous entertainment has included dressage, juggling jesters, falconry displays, calligraphy and crossbow archery.
