With miles of sandy beaches, authentic French towns and open countryside, a holiday in Vendee on the west coast of France is ideal for relaxing. Having said this, the sun, sea and sand may not be enough to keep every member of your family entertained, so you could be looking for other attractions in the area.
Vendee holidays wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the top family attraction Puy du Fou. This unique historic theme park includes a Roman Villa, a Medieval City, a labyrinth and fort. Throughout the day there are performances of spectacular shows around the park; including jousting tournaments, firework displays and Viking battles. Where else can you be entertained by knights, Vikings, musketeers and Roman soldiers?
Puy de Fou is based in the grounds of a Chateau in the town of Les Epesses, just a short drive from Vendee’s coastal resorts. It is open throughout the main summer season (May until September) and stays open into the evening and provides a good value day out. All proceeds from the park are also given to charity, so it is focused on bringing history alive, rather than making a big profit.
Vendee’s second biggest attraction is Zoo des Sables. Based close to the town of Les Sables-d’Olonne, the zoo is home to over 200 animals from around 40 different species. The zoo has a strong environmental focus, making a positive impact through its practices and education programmes. In keeping with this ethos, all the animals are housed in enclosures that closely match their natural habitat.
At the Zoo des Sables, you can see lemurs, tapirs, a variety of monkeys and birds, as well as lions, wolves and giraffes. The zoo also works hard to preserve the natural flora and fauna of the region, which can be seen as you walk around. The zoo is open all day from April to September, with shorter opening hours out of season.
With these two delightful family attractions to add to the natural delights, holidays in Vendee have a broad appeal for everyone in the family.
