The coastal resorts of Vendee are thriving towns, where you can browse the markets with the locals, enjoy a meal in a restaurant or take part in one of the many events and activities. Towns such as Les Sables d’Olonne, which is close to our most popular site - Les Sables - offers a packed event’s calendar for locals and tourists to enjoy, giving you the chance to experience something new during your Vendee holiday.
Sailing on these waters is a popular pass time, so there are regular sailing competitions from the harbour and it is the starting point of the famous Vendee Globe boat race. From Les Sables d’Olonne you can join a two hour boat trip on the schooner Fillao. The Fillao trip will include instructions on how to handle the boat and the chance to have a go and get in on the action.
A hot air balloon ride over the Vendee coast has got to offer some spectacular views, so if you give it a try, don’t forget your camera! From Olonne Sur Mer you can rise above the beaches, pine forests and rural countryside in a balloon for an experience of a lifetime.
The Zoo des Sables has a variety of animals and a strong focus on ecology. For the first time this year, you can head into the Lorikeet enclosure to feed these colourful birds with nectar. Be prepared for the birds to land on your arms, shoulders and head for a real close up experience.
Buying local produce on the markets can offer a chance to practice some French phrases and try some local specialities at any time of year, but there are also speciality events to celebrate the regional delicacies. As a couple of examples, The Sardine and Mussel Celebration In Olonne Sur Mer on 8th August, where locals enjoy food, music and dancing and you can join in too.
With time on your hands and areas of natural beauty close to our Vendee Campsites, you may feel inspired to get creative either with your camera, or by sketching or painting a scene. For further artistic input, you can head to the Musee de L’Abbaye Sainte Croix, where until the middle of May there is a Kandinsky exhibition and on 16 May you can visit the museum until 11pm.
