Whether we are planning a day out, looking to book a table in a restaurant or considering a holiday destination, we are increasingly likely to look at independent reviews. Sites such as Trip Adviser are more popular than ever, as we seek the opinions of others to help us make an informed choice.
The fact that France can attract the highest number of tourists of any country in the world is an endorsement in itself. Holiday makers range from day trippers who are crossing the borders from Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium, to those who enjoy the warm temperatures for many months of the year. Madonna, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were amongst the famous stars that enjoyed a holiday in France this year, alongside families from all around the world.
In addition, the majority of French residents also choose to stay in their own country for their holiday. With miles of clean sandy beaches, unspoilt countryside, mountains and impressive cities, there are plenty of reasons to stay relatively close to home.
Some French celebrities were asked by the Guardian newspaper about their ideal French holiday destination. Whilst the expectation is that the Cote d’Azur on the South coast is where celebrities gather, many of those questioned favoured the West coast of France or inland rural areas.
Philippe Starck, the well-known designer, chose Bassin d’Arcachon in Aquitaine due to its ideal climate, distinct seasons and its beautiful natural attractions including the sand dunes, big waves and forests. He said that there was a simple friendly appeal to the area, where he enjoyed meals of oysters and Bordeaux wines.
The chef Helene Darroze and writer Agnes Dearthe also selected Aquitaine, both enjoying different areas in and around Biarritz. It was the combination of beautiful towns, traditional ways, stunning scenery and top quality produce that made this region their favourite.
With a young family, the sportsman Sebastien Foucan selected Les Sables d’Olonne in Vendee as his top resort. With many family friendly activities he said this was a place where his family could have fun, but also relax. He noted the vast excellent beaches and sunshine made for a refreshing and stress free holiday.
