Les Sables d’Olonne is the starting and finishing point for the famous Vendee Globe Race. This road the world solo boat race is a challenge of skill, endurance, mental and physical strength. Competitors are forbidden from accepting help from anyone, so it is a very personal battle of the boat and sailor versus the seas.
The next Vendee Globe is not until 2016, but there are plenty of other sporting challenges to enjoy in Les Sables d’Olonne.
You may want to take to the water and enjoy a relaxing kayak along some of the beautiful rivers of Vendee, or head out to sea to master your skills on a surfboard or in a sailboat. If dipping your toe into the surf is as much contact with the water as you enjoy, you may prefer to hop in the saddle. From Les Sables there is a network of cycle routes that are great for exploring vendee, or you can join a horse riding tour. Through the summer, you can also take part in the TCS Trophy, a tennis tournament open to people of all ages at Tennis Club Sablais.
If you are enjoying the opportunity to switch off and relax, you may be happy to spectate and let other’s put in the effort. Through August there are a number of events in Les Sables d’Olonne, both on and off the water, where competitors will be showcasing their skills in the bid to win. They love a good audience, so go along and cheer them on!
On 7th and 21 August, the Trophy Port Olona is a sailboat race, organised by Sports Nautiques Sablais in the harbour of Port Olona. On 16 August you can watch the excitement and colour of the Youpi Board Speed Challenge, a wind surfing competition organised by Base de Mer in Quai Dingler. Off the water, horse racing events are held at Hippodrome de la Malbrande throughout August.
Later in the season, the Surf Cup is a two day event at the end of September, which offers the opportunity to view some spectacular surf board skills.
