One of the best things about the Vendee is that it caters to all holiday preferences.
Whether you're a keen camper, love going for long rambles, or prefer to spend your days chilling out on the beach, there's something for everyone in this stunning French department, including wildlife lovers.
From zoos and aquariums to farms and parkland, you can get up close to a range of creatures during your upcoming break.
These attractions in particular come highly recommended:
Zoo des Sables D'Olonne
As the Vendee's second largest tourist attraction, it's safe to assume that the Zoo des Sables D'Olonne is popular all-year-round - and for good reason. Some 360 animals reside here, including endangered species like pandas, lions, gibbons and giraffes.
You can also check out a plethora of different birds and feed multicoloured lorikeets.
Spanning three hectares of lush greenery by the coast, the zoo's aims are to promote eco-citizenship while protecting exotic biodiversity.
Aquarium le Septieme Continent
Those who prefer to marvel at sea creatures must plan a visit to the Aquarium le Septieme Continent, which is home to more than 500 species in a number of themed tanks. All sorts of ocean-related activities take place here, such as guided tours and fish feeding.
Other highlights of the aquarium include the tropical Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea display, where you can see octopuses, dogfish and sea woodcock, besides many other species. Head to the Coral Triangle exhibit to check out fish like the blue-striped snapper, barracuda, clownfish and blue lobster.
Maison de l'Ane
This children's farm specialising in various breeds of donkey, horse and ass can be found out in the marshes on the Route du Gois.
See film presentations on donkey care and birth, before taking your little ones on a donkey ride in the countryside. Depending on what time of year you visit, you may even get to see the farmers doing the milking.
Maison de l'Ane is great for family-friendly fun and the chance to learn about these fantastic farm animals.
