Tour the West Coast of France with Carisma  28/05/2014

The regions along the west coast of France shares miles of sandy beaches and the exhilarating Atlantic Sea, but each retains its own character, traditions and attractions. To get a real taste of France, you could consider a multi destination holiday, using Carisma campsites as your base as you explore the northern, central and southern areas.

Brittany in Northern France is easy to reach by Ferry and depending on your port, a couple of hours in the car will take you to our campsite. Brittany is an unspoilt region with a rugged coastline, hidden coves and historic architecture. It has a rich history, for a long time independent of the rest of France and the culture of Breton is still celebrated in local festivals. Two examples are July’s Festival de Cornouaille in Quimper and the InterCeltic Festival in Lorient during August.

Amongst its many delights, Brittany is home to the Benedictine Abbey of Mont St Michel, traditional fishing harbours, marinas full of luxury yachts, medieval towns and the Kermario standing stones in Carnac, which are said to rival Stonehenge. Off the mainland are a number of islands which can be visited by local boat tours including Ile d’Ouessant and Ile de Groix.
Having explored Brittany, a drive down the coast will take you to Vendee for a relaxed pace of life. We have a choice of campsites in Vendee, all close to stunning beaches. This region of France is a popular holiday destination, as it boasts clean and expansive stretches of sand and a wealth of watersports. This could be the ideal place to ditch the car for a few days and enjoy the miles of cycle paths that are perfect for discovering the natural landscape.

Vendee is a warm and tranquil area, with great examples of Romanesque churches, delicious seafood cuisine and the stunning city of La Rochelle. If you are looking for a bit more action, there are also lively attractions in Vendee including High Rope challenges, a Water Toboggan park, Puy du Fou, a historic theme park and Futurescope with its virtual rides.

After relaxing in Vendee, you can head further down the coast to our campsite in Messanges in the Gascony region. Within driving distance from Bordeaux to the north and the Spanish boarder to the south, this region offers culinary delights. For a taste of the high life, Biarritz has attracted wealthy holiday makers for centuries and it is a city where you can enjoy museums, casinos and a lively nightlife. In contrast, the spa town of Dax is renowned for its rejuvenating spring water.

Let Carisma help you to explore the character, cuisine and culture of the west coast of France. Our mobile home accommodation is well equipped and staying on French campsites offers you maximum freedom to come and go as you please.
