Let it never be said that you can’t enjoy the finest things in life while camping in France. In fact, in Vendee you’ll be presented with gastronomic spoils that put some of the larger settlements and cities to shame.
This is food-lover territory and nowhere is this clearer than with the delectable seafood that is caught fresh from the Atlantic. Whether its succulent oysters and langoustines or freshly-caught sardines and sea-bass, tasty morsels from the sea can be found right across the department.
However, arguably the best source of seafood is L’Aiguillon Bay, where you’ll find amazing restaurants preparing the tasty shellfish that are to be found in these shallow waters. As you’ve probably guessed, Vendee’s food scene is all about local flavours – combining seafood with the fruits (and vegetables) of the region’s fertile farmlands.
With so much delicious produce on offer, it is unsurprising that Vendee has a thriving restaurant scene with more than a few Michelin stared-establishments open to patrons and attracting some of the country’s best chefs to the area.
One of the newer additions is Thierry Drapeau’s award-winning home cookery, which opened earlier this year at Le Domaine de la Chabotterie in Saint Sulpice le Verdon, less than an hour’s drive from Les Sables, our number one campsite.
Here, you’ll actually be able to undertake a cookery course with the double Michelin-starred chef, and you’ll come away with plenty of ideas to try out in your own kitchen following your holiday. Don’t worry, there’s plenty of tasting included as well.
Wherever you visit while in Vendee you’ll find great local flavours on every corner, so it can be a good idea to plan a few hikes or bike rides if you don’t want to come back needing a whole new wardrobe.
One place where temptation can certainly get the better of even the strongest willed is Monsieur Arnaud’s chocolate boutique in Olonne-sur-Mere, just a few kilometres north of Les Sables. Here you’ll find delicious cocoa treats with 45 minute tour and tasting sessions also on offer.
