Getting off to a Good Start

Arriving in France early in the morning? You may like to take more time to stop off and enjoy an attraction on route

If your ferry crossing means that you arrive in France early in the morning, you may like to take more time to stop off and enjoy an attraction on route. This can break up the journey and get the holiday off to a good start long before you reach your French campsite.

Depending on your route, some of the larger cities that you may pass include Nantes, Rennes, Chartres and Tours. In any of these cities you will find cafes and restaurants so you can refuel. In addition there are a good variety of attractions which may make an ideal stop off point. Below we’ve provided a few suggestions.

Nantes

If you are looking for a beautiful setting for a picnic and wander or a place where children can run around and play, Jardin des Plantes in Nantes could be ideal. For a more unusual attraction, Les Machines de L’ile is a delightful wonderland, based on the imagination of Jules Verne; its unusual creations can inspire both children and adults. Meanwhile, history comes to life at another Nantes attraction; the Chateau de Ducs de Bretagne.

Rennes

The historic centre of Rennes is full of impressive architecture and there are plenty of interesting streets to wander through. Parc des Gayeulles is a family friendly destination, with picnic and BBQ areas, playgrounds, a farm and mini golf. Another outdoor attraction is La Roche aux Fees, a megalithic site of standing stones.

Chartres

Chartres is home to one of Europe’s best preserved cathedrals and its impressive stained glass windows steal the show. Currently under restoration, you will be able to see the architecture in its original glory. If you’ve been delighted by the stained glass, you may also enjoy a trip to the Centre International du Vitrail, to learn more about the techniques and history of this glass work. Another hidden gem is the Maison Picassiette, a house covered in mosaics.

Tours

The Museum of Beaux Arts and Museum of Natural History are both full of fascinating exhibits which may be of interest. The main pedestrian street, Rue Nationale is great for a wander, especially if you like shopping and the Jardin Botanique de Tours offers a delightful outdoor setting for picnics, fresh air and a chance to stretch your legs.

A good break makes your journey feel like part of the holiday and can help you feel refreshed when you arrive at your final destination. Our Carisma couriers will provide information on local attractions once you’ve settled in.
