Western France  16/02/2015

From the border with Spain, up to the northern coasts of Brittany, every year the west coast of France attracts many French holiday makers. Escaping the busy French cities for the relaxed coastal resorts is a tradition that has continued for many decades and if it is good enough for Parisians, then there must be something appealing about the west coast.

South West Coast of France

Biarritz used to be the west coast holiday destination of choice for the rich and famous of France. It still retains a timeless elegance, a rich array of stunning architecture and plenty to keep holiday makers entertained. However these days it is the huge waves and sandy beaches that attract many visitors to Biarritz, as it has become popular with surfers and other water sport enthusiasts in search of the ultimate wave.

From Biarritz, up the west coast to the Gironde estuary, there are a wealth of surf schools and adventure holidays for those seeking an active holiday experience. For those who prefer to sit back, relax and watch the thrill seekers, there are miles of sandy beaches and a hot summer climate in this southern coastal region.

If you are looking for an active family holiday in the sun, Camping le Vieux Port, our campsite in Messanges won’t disappoint. With direct access to the beach and an impressive pool complex, you may not spend much time out of your swimming costumes. With football pitches, tennis courts, horse riding, karting and evening entertainment, all the family can keep busy and have fun throughout the day. It is easy to understand why this quality resort has been awarded 5 stars in the Michelin Guide.

Also in this region is our site at Bicarrosse. There is a different ambience here and the feeling is more laid back, although there is still a wealth of activities for all ages. A lakeside, rather than coastal resort, this site is better suited to younger families, as the sandy lakeside beaches are gently sloping and you are away from the Atlantic waves. You can try sailing, kayaking and a number of other activities on the large lake and the site is a short drive from the coast.

A day trip from Biscarrosse could take you to another popular resort, Arcachon. This stylish town is full of delightful shops, bars, restaurants and is a haven for modern city dwellers. Alternatively you could scale the heights of Europe’s highest sand dune, Dune du Pilat, or visit the historic and prosperous city of Bordeaux.
